Srey Mao: A story of success

Posted by Meas Raksmey on October 31, 2009

Below is a story about a woman who works her way from being a cleaner to a platoon leader in Cambodian Mine Action Center. I interviewed her and wrote this story some time ago. Enjoy…:D

Many women are raising to the top now in Cambodia. Chim Sreymao, a 37 year-old platoon leader in the CMAC, is one of them; but her story of success has a very unlikely beginning. Having only a grade 8 education, Sreymao started out as a cleaner in the CMAC in 1996. Her wish then was to find enough money to feed her hungry family. “My family was very poor. I had an old mother and another three siblings. My father passed away long ago,” says Sreymao.

My short video during my internship in Malaysia

Posted by Meas Raksmey on September 29, 2009

Here is a short video I produced during my internship with the The Star Malaysia. I found it very challenging and hard to finish because of a number of reasons: long distance traveling, language barrier ( he can’t speak English), unfamiliarity with the people’s culture…etc. Frankly, I think this video is not good enough and there is a lot of rooms for improvement. If you have any idea about how it can be improved please kindly drop comments. Anyway, for now, please enjoy the video…Thanks

Watch and think…

Posted by Meas Raksmey on September 10, 2009

Here is a video produced by a group of people in Malaysia. Nothing complicated, so I think viewers will understand it. This video really reminds me of my home country-the previous and ongoing evictions of people from the city. Where will they go? And what will be the future of their children? Why can’t development bring a fair share to the people?

My Reflection on the E-learning course

Posted by Meas Raksmey on August 11, 2009

What did I find out during the cooperation project?

I have found out many things. During my research about Germany, I found some interesting facts about this country.

What did I find most interesting, strange, funny, awkward?

I have had Pauline as a partner in this course which is really interesting. She has told me a lot about life as a university student and as a German individual. I think life there is interesting in a way and busy in another. Pauline told about having to study with one lecturer for the whole day. It must have been very tiring, if not boring .:D Anyway, What I found funny about German people is that when I produced a video about bugs and insects that Cambodian eat, I was told that German people do not eat these and are even scary of them. I don’t know about them but I like these bugs…:D

What was easy, what was difficult in the communication process?

The easy part in this course is that we don’t have too many things to do. This is more like finding a friend and keep communicate with him/her. So, it is not an additional burden to my study. However, there are some drags too. The obvious one is the limitation of communicaiton caused by the low capacity of the internet here in Cambodia. There are a lot more technical problems for us to overcome to have a smoother and better communication with people abroad.

What would I still like to find out from the other students?

Oh I really want to know if other students feel interested in this course too. I mean I really feel that this course has helped me understand more about Germany students and also how to communicate across the continental and cultural border.

What is the meaning of life for you?

Posted by Meas Raksmey on May 6, 2009

During lunch time the other day my friend asked me “What is that you have but cannot see?” At first, I felt a bit confused and funny about this question. However, after many unsuccessful attempts to give a correct answer, I gave in and begged for the answer. My friend laughed and said I was always too serious about everything that I failed to see the invisible thing I only had one: Life. He might be right that I often take things too seriously; but, to say that I am overlooking my life was not fair. Despite the seemingly uncaring look, I do have a clear philosophy about life—my life, to be precise. To me, life is a long-lasting journey which can be adventurous but demands thorough planning for destination.

Interview with the voiceover artist

Posted by Meas Raksmey on January 10, 2009

What would you do if you could speak four different kinds of voices including young, old, soft tough…etc. Well, for Mrs. Sok Darasy, she chose to become a voice over artist. Just in case you don’t know what the voice over artist is, she is the one who makes foreign movies understandable to Cambodians by dubbing her voice into the characters using Khmer language. I have conducted a long and interesting interview with her the other day. I think it is very long that I need to break it into two pieces. I’ll post it one after another there. Now please enjoy reading the conversation.
